BREAKING NEWS: THE AFRICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (AfBA) Sets up Planning Committee for the 2020 AfBA Annual Conference, Appoints Prof Jerry Agbo Madaki Chairman (see other members, further details)

The African bar Association has set up a planning committee for the 2020 Annual General Conference of the Association, scheduled to hold in Kampala, Uganda, from 26 October 2020 to 30 October 2020. The appointment was made in a letter dated September 04, 2020, signed personally by the President of the African Bar Association, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo, and addressed to the Chairman and Members of the Planning Committee. The letter named Prof. Jerry Agbo Madaki the Chairman of the Committee. 

Also appointed as members of the Committee are Prof. John Philport (Canada); Monsieur Seydou Doumbia (Vice Chair); Maj. Fen. Yusuf Shalangwa (Mali); Mr. Sylvester Udemezue (Nigeria), Brig. Gen. The letter reads, part:


"On behalf of the Governing Council of the African Bar Association (AfBA), I write to inform you and persons on the attached List, of your appointments as CHAIRMAN and Members Planning Committee of the 2020 Virtual Conference of the African Bar Association (General Secretariat). The Conference which is hosted by the Ugandan Forum of the African Bar Association in collaboration with the Ugandan Law Society and the Government of Uganda will have a Local Organizing Committee headed by the Country Co-coordinator (Uganda) Mr. Francis Harimwomugasho whose information is provided hereunder for you to liaise with. The V.P. East Africa Dr. Prudence Acikorop will be co-coordinating the L.O.C. in Uganda. Other members of your Committee who are copied in this letter are as listed hereunder. 

The terms of reference of the Committee and time-lines includes: 

(1) Choosing a suitable theme for the Conference (3 days) from receipt of this letter. 

(2) Choosing suitable topics for the various Conference Sessions (1 week). 

(3) Selecting, informing and confirming suitable Speakers, Resource persons and other expert persons for the Conference Sessions. 

(4) Giving maximum publicity to the Conference in every relevant media outlet to minimum target participants of 5,000 from all over the World (5 weeks). 

(5) Liaise with and invite Special Guests from Nigeria, Africa and the World over to Grace and or participate in any form in the event (2 weeks). 

(6) Seek for Sponsors, Partners, Contributors, Collaborators, etc and enter into any agreement that will benefit the Association and the Conference. All other matters related to or connected with the Conference or any other duties as may be assigned by the President or the Governing Council Chairman (4 weeks). 

The Committee may also co-opt any other Lawyer or relevant persons subject to approval by the President. 

Please kindly note that the Governing Council has approved fees for the Virtual Conference as follows: 

(1)  Members of AFBA, Judicial Officers, Academics:  $20/£20/N9,000;

(2)  Non-members/Africans:  $35/£35/N15,700;

(3) Non-Africans: $50/£50/N22,500;

(4) All Students: $10/10/N4,500.

The President of the African Bar Association (AfBA), Mr Hannibal Uwaifo, will virtually inaugurate the 2020 Conference Planning Committee on Tuesday 8 August 2020 at 12.noon, prompt via ZOOM. The Ceremony will last 20 minutes only. All members of the Committee, Senior officials of AfBA and other invited Guests are to be hooked on to the Zoom link latest 11.55am.
